Wine & Cider Menu
Here at The Hereford we are passionate about championing the best local producers and suppliers from the abundant fields and orchards of Herefordshire and neighbouring counties. We are delighted to be working with Susanna Forbes of Little Pomona Orchard & Cidery and Tanners wine merchants, who have both helped to curate our wine and cider list.
Little Pomona Orchard & Cidery
Herefordshire has been a true heartland for good cider and perry for centuries and The Green Dragon is proud to showcase some of the world’s finest producers in The Hereford.
Our county’s rolling hills, its equable climate and its rich soils coupled with generations of cider making culture has resulted in the selection you have here. We are delighted to work with established global rock stars of the cider and perry world Tom Oliver and Greggs Pit, this year’s BBC Food & Farming Drinks Producer of the Year, Ross on Wye Cider & Perry, and Little Pomona and Once Upon A Tree, two of the producers leading the cider renaissance.
So forget the prosecco for a moment and enjoy the sparkle of these ciders and perries as you peruse the menu. Back in the seventeenth and eighteenth century, it was these drinks, prized above wine for delicacy and finesse that graced the tables of nobility and royalty. Thus it seemed only natural to feature sharing bottles so you too can experience the best of what was once dubbed ‘England’s wine’.
But they’re not just aperitif material. With their balance of beautiful fruit sweetness, streak of acidity and lick of tannins, these ciders and perries marry food brilliantly. If it’s fish, vegetarian or light meats, think of Gregg’s Pit Perry, Oliver’s Yarlington Mill or Little Pomona’s Brut Crémant. Where its bigger flavours, just like in a red wine, look for tannins, so Ross on Wye’s Harry Masters Jersey. And cheese or lightly spiced dishes partner the whole collection with panache
If these inspire you, consult our selection in the Offa Bar too. As we say in cider country, Wassail!
